How to Pin Frequently Used Items in Windows Clipboard History

How many times do you copy and paste the same information?

Maybe it’s your brand colors, your website address, a standard response you send frequently, or a little block of text you use all the time.

Instead of keeping that information in a separate document and hunting for it every time you need it, Windows has a handy feature that can keep frequently used clipboard items right at your fingertips.

It’s called Clipboard History, and one of my favorite features is the ability to pin items you want to keep.

What Is Windows Clipboard History?

Normally, when you copy something using Ctrl + C, Windows places it on your clipboard so you can paste it somewhere else.

But then you copy something new…and something else…and something else.

That’s where Clipboard History comes in.

Instead of giving you access to only the last thing you copied, Clipboard History lets you see multiple items you’ve recently copied.

To open it, press:

Windows key + V

If you haven’t used Clipboard History before, Windows may ask you to turn the feature on first.

Once it’s enabled, pressing Windows + V displays your recent clipboard items so you can choose the one you want to paste.

Why Would You Pin Something to Your Clipboard?

Clipboard History is useful by itself, but there are probably some things you don’t want disappearing from that list.

That’s where pinning comes in.

For example, I keep my brand colors pinned to my Clipboard History because I use those color codes constantly.

Other things you might want to pin could include:

  • Your website address
  • A short business description
  • A frequently used response
  • A standard signature or text block
  • A link you use regularly
  • Other non-sensitive information you copy and paste frequently

Instead of finding the information somewhere else, copying it, switching back to what you were doing, and then pasting it, you can keep it available in Clipboard History.

Little time-savers add up.

How to Pin an Item in Windows Clipboard History

First, copy the information you want to save.

Then press:

Windows + V

Find the item in your Clipboard History and use its menu or pin option to pin the item.

That tells Windows you want to keep that particular clipboard item available.

The next time you need it, press Windows + V again and select your pinned item to paste it.

No hunting for the original information required.

Pinned Items Can Stay When You Clear Clipboard History

This is where pinning becomes especially useful.

Your Clipboard History can eventually fill up with all kinds of random things you’ve copied throughout the day.

You can clear that temporary clipboard history without necessarily losing the items you intentionally pinned.

That means I can get rid of all the miscellaneous clipboard clutter while keeping things like my brand colors available for the next time I need them.

Instead of treating everything you’ve copied as equally important, you’re telling Windows:

Keep this one. I use it all the time.

Be Careful What You Pin

There are some things I would not recommend keeping in Clipboard History.

Passwords, credit card numbers, banking information, and other sensitive personal information don’t belong on your list of convenient things to keep hanging around.

Use this feature for information that saves you time without creating an unnecessary security or privacy risk.

Your brand hex code? Great.

Your banking password? Absolutely not. 😂

Turn Repetitive Copying Into a Shortcut

One of my favorite ways to make technology easier is to notice the little repetitive things I do over and over.

If you regularly find yourself thinking:

“Where did I put that thing I always copy?”

Windows Clipboard History might be able to eliminate that little scavenger hunt.

Press Windows + V, pin the things you use frequently, and let Windows keep them handy for you.

Because saving a few clicks here and a few minutes there is exactly how technology starts giving you some of your time back.

Technology Made Simple. 💙
