You know those emails that land in your inbox and make you think, “I need to deal with this…but definitely not right now”?
You don’t necessarily need to leave them sitting in your inbox hoping you’ll remember them later.
Gmail has a Snooze feature that temporarily removes an email from your Inbox and brings it back at a date and time you choose.
Basically, you’re telling Gmail: “Not now. Bring this back when I can actually do something about it.”
And after finally trying this feature myself, I have to admit—it’s pretty handy. 😂

What Does Snooze Do in Gmail?
When you snooze an email, Gmail removes it from your Inbox until the time you select.
You aren’t deleting it.
You aren’t archiving it and hoping you remember where it went.
You’re deliberately choosing when you want that email to return to your attention.
At the scheduled time, Gmail brings the snoozed email back to the top of your Inbox.
The returning email itself becomes your reminder that it’s time to deal with it.
When Would You Snooze an Email?
Imagine an email arrives late Friday afternoon asking you to take care of something on Monday.
You don’t need to act on it today, but you also don’t want it getting buried under everything that arrives over the weekend.
Snooze it until Monday morning.
Maybe an email arrives today about something you can’t handle until tomorrow.
Snooze it until tomorrow.
Or perhaps you’re waiting until later in the week when you’ll have the information you need to respond.
You guessed it.
Snooze it.
Instead of asking your brain to remember that the email exists, let Gmail put it back in front of you when it’s relevant.
How to Snooze an Email in Gmail
Find the email you want to snooze and select the Snooze option—the little clock icon.
Gmail will give you several suggested times, or you can choose your own date and time.
Select when you want the email to return, and Gmail removes it from your Inbox.
That’s it.
No complicated setup. No elaborate email-management system required.
Where Does a Snoozed Email Go?
Here’s the part I wanted to know when I started experimenting with this feature.
Your email doesn’t disappear into the mysterious Gmail abyss. 😂
Gmail has a Snoozed section where you can see the messages you’ve snoozed.
So if you suddenly think, “Wait, I actually need that email now,” you can still find it.
You don’t have to wait until the scheduled time to access it.
Can You Change Your Mind?
Absolutely.
If you decide you’re ready to deal with the email before its scheduled return, go to your Snoozed messages, find the email, and remove the snooze.
You can also snooze it again for another time if your plans change.
The point isn’t to make the email inaccessible.
It’s to control when it needs your attention.
Snooze Isn’t the Same as a Reminder or Task
It’s helpful to understand what Gmail Snooze is—and what it isn’t.
Snoozing an email doesn’t turn it into a full task-management system or calendar appointment.
Instead, the email itself returns to your Inbox at the time you’ve selected.
So if something absolutely must happen at a particular time or has serious consequences if you forget it, you may still want to put it on your calendar or task list.
But for the everyday “I need this later, not now” email?
Snooze can be wonderfully simple.
Let Your Inbox Show You What Matters Now
Your inbox doesn’t have to be a holding area for every email you might need someday.
If an email isn’t actionable right now but you know you’ll need it later, consider snoozing it until the time it becomes relevant.
It gets out of your way today.
Gmail keeps it available in your Snoozed section.
And when the time comes, it lands back in your Inbox where you can deal with it.
That’s a tiny feature that can remove one more thing from your mental list of “stuff I need to remember.”
And I’m a fan of letting technology remember the little things whenever it can. 💙
