Get Better AI Results by Giving It More Context

Have you ever asked AI to write something and thought, “Well…that wasn’t exactly what I was hoping for?”

Most of the time, the problem isn’t the AI.

It’s that we haven’t given it enough information.

In this week’s Quick Win, I’m sharing one of the easiest ways to get better results from AI—by simply giving it more context.

📺 Watch the video below to see exactly what I mean.

Think of AI like a new employee. If you simply say, “Write me a Facebook post about Canva,” it’ll do its best—but it has to make a lot of assumptions. It doesn’t know who you’re talking to, what tone you want, or what you’re hoping your audience will do after reading it.

Now compare that to this prompt:

Write a friendly Facebook post about Canva for women over 40 who are intimidated by technology. Encourage them by explaining that Canva is easier than they might think. Use an encouraging, conversational tone and end with a question that invites comments.

That’s a completely different conversation.

Give AI the Details

The more context you provide, the better AI can tailor its response to your needs.

Before you hit Enter, ask yourself:

  • Who is my audience?
  • What do I want them to learn or do?
  • What tone should I use?
  • Where will this content be shared?
  • Are there any words or phrases I want to include—or avoid?

You don’t need to write a page of instructions. Just give AI enough information to understand what you’re trying to accomplish.

A Simple Example

Instead of this:

Write a Facebook post about Canva.

Try this:

Write a friendly Facebook post about Canva for women over 40 who are intimidated by technology. Help them see that Canva is easier than they think, use an encouraging tone, and finish with a question that encourages conversation.

Notice what changed?

You didn’t just tell AI what to write.

You told it who it was writing for and how you wanted it to sound.

That’s often the difference between a response that’s “okay” and one that’s ready to use with just a few small edits.

AI Is a Conversation, Not a Command

One of the biggest misconceptions about AI is that you have to get your prompt perfect the first time.

You don’t.

If the first response isn’t quite right, keep the conversation going. Ask it to make the tone friendlier. Tell it your audience needs more encouragement. Request a shorter version or ask it to explain something more simply.

The more context you give—and the more you refine the conversation—the better your results become.

Your Quick Win

The next time you use AI, don’t just tell it what you want.

Tell it:

  • Who your audience is.
  • What outcome you’re hoping for.
  • What voice or tone you’d like it to use.

You may be surprised at how much better the results become.

Sometimes, adding just one or two extra sentences of context is all it takes to turn a generic response into something that feels like it was written specifically for your audience.
